California’s wildfires have been decreasing over the past 25 years but the only reason is because we have been able to improve our technology on how we put out the fires. If we didn’t have the technology today these wildfires could get out of control. Although wildfires have been decreasing, this summer we have been having them more than the average Californian wildfire. The number of Californian fires have increased slightly. This summer many counties have had to raise the red flag and evacuate their homes, many believe that the drought from 2011 is the cause of it as well as climate change.

This article shows that climate change has affected California, and that it has been one of the reasons for our big wildfires. The drought and the lack of water in our state has almost driven us into a crisis, with water levels dropping we don’t have enough, which causes plants to dry up, eventually causing them to burn causing these huge wildfires that not only destroy our environment, but also our homes. As the fires have increased this year it has been up to our technology, and our technology has made a huge positive impact on the way we put out our fires, which has saved us a lot of land from being destroyed.

  1. Interesting article- did it happen to mention the El Nino as part of the cause of this year’s fires? More rain = more growth of grass, etc. which then eventually dries out and now there is more fuel to burn. I’m surprised that the fires are in decline though- I thought otherwise.

    • The article didn’t mention El Nino as part of this years fires, sorry there was a typo, I fixed it but I meant to say that although the fires have been on decline over the years this year they have increased again.

  2. I think that the drought has a very serious impact on the wildfires. If the forests are dry, then they are more susceptible to dangerous fires. However, fires are also a part of nature and sometimes they are good for it. Should we try to control the fires or let them burn?

    • Although fires are a part of nature and it is good for the land, you now it is a problem when those fires get so out of control that they burn down towns, and kill people. Of course we should control them mainly the ones that threaten our crops, and our homes. You wouldn’t want to live in LA where fires have been at constant and just let it burn your home, you’d want to control them. At this point you not only want to think about having a healthy environment, but also the safety of people who live close to these forest fire areas.

  3. I agree with JR that fires are natural, and sometimes we should let them occur. Fires help bring nutrients back to the soil, and makes space for new plants and trees.

    • I agree that they are helpful to the environment, but like I replied to JR you have to start thinking of peoples safety, these fires are destroying peoples homes and killing them, of course you’d want to control the fires. Natural fires can occur and they are good for the environment, but it’s just important to be aware of the danger they can become if you just let them burn naturally. So just regulating or controlling the fires would be better, and safer.
