The Clean Water Act is a law that helps keep water clean throughout the state. The law lets the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set rules about how much pollution can go into rivers, lakes, and water in general. Cities and businesses have to get permits if they would want to put their waste into the water. This law also gives money to help build and fix water treatment plants. The Environmental Protection Agency works with states and Native American tribes to check for pollution and make sure the rules are followed. However on May 22, 2025 the EPA issued a memorandum that States and Tribes cannot use the Clean Water Act to stop projects that are key for economic growth in areas such as energy, mining, and infrastructure. Instead the Act should be used by States and Tribes only to protect water quality.
The Clean Water Act is an important part of the community as it has helped monitor the use of waters throughout the area. Having businesses and cities have to get permits is a good idea because if there was no need for permits, anyone would be able to pollute the water and put it for a bad cause. After looking through the differences between the law in 1948 and how it changed in 1972 made me realize how important the switch was. In my opinion, I believe that if possible, another addition to the law should be made in the next following years adding more laws about what percentage of water belongs to who, and what we should do about the pollution in public waters. I believe the clarification of May of 2025 was directed to make sure environmental factors, such as protection of clean water sources, are not used by States to limit economic development projects that are planned by the Federal government
