Curry, M. (2014, November 4). CA Voters Vote on a Swath of Transportation Measures. Retrieved November 22, 2014, from Streets Blog LA website: http://la.streetsblog.org/2014/11/04/ca-voters-weigh-planning-and-transportation-measures/
According to the California Taxpayer’s Association, “Californians will vote today on over 200 measures that propose to raise money via bonds or taxes for a variety of services,” including transportation measures that will provide funding for public transit and repairing streets. There are a large number of propositions that were proposed on this ballot that must be passed only by a 2/3 majority. Measure BB proposed to “increase the existing sales tax by ½ cent to fund transportation infrastructure improvements like to expand mass transit, improve highway infrastructure, improve local streets and roads, and improve bicycle and pedestrian safety” and Proposition B “would require the city to increase the base amount of funding it provides transit, walking, and biking by a percentage that equals population growth.”
This article shows that just in California, there are a number of measures and propositions that are voted on each year dedicated to improving transportation. Not all articles will be passed by 2/3 majority, but even if only a few are passed, I believe it will truly put California in the right direction. I found it interesting that Measure BB dedicated to fund transportation infrastructure improvements, and improve roads, transit and bicycle safety was not passed on the last ballot. It received a 66.53% of the vote, but needed a 66.67% vote.
