Pikas Under Attack!

Poor Pikas Losing Their California Habitat to Climate Change. (2015, February 3). Retrieved March 1, 2015, from http://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/12476/20150203/poor-pikas-losing-their-california-habitat-to-climate-change.htm

Pikas, small rodent creatures living in the Great Basin region of California, are under threat by rising temperatures. Their habitat is changing because of a warming climate and as their numbers dwindle the remaining population is migrating further and further up the mountains to escape the heat. This is an issue because pikas are instrumental players in their ecosystems. As an indicator species, their movements and population size is telling us that our anthropogenic contributions to climate change are taking their toll of California wildlife.

The pikas are important to their ecosystems and to human interest in preserving biodiversity in our backyards here in California. Pikas are a model species for the human impact on climate change and its secondary effect on the world around us. As sensitive creatures, they are giving us an early warning as to what could occur with a huge range of our wildlife should we continue our current behavior
