Soil Erosion in California Article 3

All along the coast of california, soil erosion has been very prevalent; there have been many instances of landslides and the “disappearance” of lots of soil/land in the past year. This has displaced many residents who live on the coast of california, and has destroyed some beautiful coast.

Not only can soil erosion destroy farmland, but it can also destroy the coastal regions of California; this could displace many people, but also destroy some of the treasured places of California. Measures must be taken to reduce the soil erosion in California, otherwise, California will be hit hard, and will lose a lot. California can not afford to lose lots of farmland, and could suffer financially if we lose lots of our famous coastal regions.

  1. I guess erosion is the natural fate of any coast line. Did the article mention any fears of the incoming El Nino storms. Of course our issue is the transportation routes that have landslides and the people who are building homes in high erosion areas. What do you think… should there be regulations on people building in these high impact areas… so the damage of sliding houses, etc doesn’t have to be picked up by tax payers (not to mention the env. damage). Or should people be able to do what they want?

    • Thanks for your comment; it is true, there is not a lot that we can do to stop soil erosion on the coast. There definitely should be restrictions on where people are allowed to build homes, in order to stop certain injury, damage and high costs. The risks of soil erosion and landslides are too great to risk it.

  2. It is interesting how you related the erosion to civilians. Many of the abstracts I have read have been directly related to the environment. The impact that it has on residents is super important to point out and I think this area is in need of more attention.

  3. Soil erosion is scary and I could never buy a house right on a cliff over the ocean unlike some people. Is there an average of how much soil erodes each year?
