An Insurance Company in Ghana

This article talks about how fishers can get insurance for accidental deaths as well as loss of gear. It currently takes place in Ghana at a certain number of land beaches. The project by November, 2016 is expected to cover at least 70 percent of fishing communities in the Central, Western, and along the coast of Ghana. This project will provide insurance coverage for over 200,00 people when the project is complete.

This can help the environment by giving fishers some control in their lives. In addition it can also help fishers get advice on how to fish sustainably so they do not overfish and kill a certain type of fish. This can help fishers feel that they are more financially stable, and thus use less risky tactics of catching fish that can harm both the fish and the fisher. This can help the ecosystem, through the gradual decrease of catches happening per year.

  1. I like the connection that you drew between fishers having more stability so they will use less risky fishing techniques and will overfish less than before. Who is starting this project to insure the fishermen?

  2. This sounds like a key development for a place like Ghana, that is in transition to a global power. Do you think insuring working people will extend to other popular unskilled labor in countries like this?
