Locations and communities adopting Environmental Friendly Technology is arguably as important as the technology itself. In this article, the 10 cities that use green transportation are researched. Green transportation means carpooling, biking, walking or public transportation. In Washington, D.C. even the buses are greener as they use natural gas or are a hybrid. For this city it is very important to have a local train system, Metrorail, and then a Metrobus that covers the missed sections by the trains. The final component they incorporate is a bike share program.

It is very important for major cities to adopt greener practices because huge amounts of people live in cities. Not only will it put less strain on the environment but it also helps people save time and money (don’t have to worry about parking or spend money on gas or insurance). It is incredibly important for these communities, like Washington, D.C. to provide these options.

  1. Have you been to Washington DC? Their train system is over the top- very cool. What other cities made the cut? One thing that occurs to me is the question of scalability. Do you think that only big cities make sense for mass transportation systems. Is there a tipping point when a city is too small to justify mass transportation?

    • Thanks for your thoughtful comments and questions. Other cities included New York and the Bay Area although I think our area can improve a lot. Scalability is a good question but I think that question could be answered by prioritizing the larger cities first. By prioritizing the communities with more people, it’ll have greater impact.
