Eating Locally and in Season: Is It Really Better for the Environment?,

This article talks about the importance of eating based off of season, if you were to eat a strawberry for example, during the winter. It would have to be flown over from somewhere across the world where it was in season. This makes it cost more and it is not environmentally friendly. It is also healthier to eat food based off of the seasons because this forces variety into a person’s diet. Overall it is beneficial to go to the market and have local in season fruits rather than processed or out of season fruit.

Relation to Environmental Science:

This relates to environmental science because when a fruit or vegetable is being flown over because someone wants to eat it out of season, it causes a lot of c02 emissions which overtime is environmentally damaging. This poses the questions of whether it is really worth it to eat fruit that is not in season, considering it is both economically and environmentally not friendly.

  1. I found this addition to eat locally very interesting as we recently have been juggling with the question of what is the best way to eat sustainably in class. Although I would be interested to get further insight on your opinion is as to whether this is a realistic solution? Or maybe what you think some negative impacts of eating with the seasons and locally would be, such as raise in prices?

  2. I agree that is is healthier and more environmentally friendly to consume foods such a fruits that are in season due to the benefits such as less co2 emissions produced. If the whole human population were to only consume foods that are in season, how much can an individual consume, would we have to limit the amount of food eaten or would it be the same?

  3. I agree that it is more enviromentally friendly to eat food in season. However when you go to super markets they offer a wide variety of different fruits and veg that are not in season. Is there anything the larger scale super markets can do to try to encourage people to shop in season?
