RENEWABLE ENERGY: Deal emerges to bring 1st offshore wind farms to Calif.

Laconangelo, D. (2020, February 20). RENEWABLE ENERGY: Deal emerges to bring 1st offshore wind farms to Calif. Retrieved March 7, 2020, from https://www.eenews.net/stories/1062398125

Offshore wind farms off the coast of California have been in talks for years, but have had such a difficult time with implementation due to the Department of Defense. They claim that wind turbines interfere with radar and low altitude flights that are essential to military training. Finally, the Department of Defense and wind manufacturers have reached resolve. Developers are allowed to manufacture turbines in central California waters that are incompatible with military operations, at the compromise that developers won’t generate wind power in other locations. This resolve includes locations such as Morro Bay, and Diablo Canyon sections of California. The goal of the project is to develop 3.3 gigawatts of offshore wind power capable of powering over 2 million homes.

This article relates to environmental science because it discusses how the state of California is becoming more and more aware of the topic of climate change. As the state reaches compromises with the federal government, California becomes increasingly forward-thinking and aware of replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy. I agree with California’s decision making because it will help in the effort of becoming carbon-independent, in the wake of serious climate change issues plaguing the global community.

  1. If wind energy can negotiate with the US military and make a deal, that is hopeful. As you know, wind has some issues… but I think we all want to see it work. You can imagine that there are conflicts like this in lots of places. Do you think offshore wind is the best type of windmill… where we will get the most return on investment?

    • I absolutely think offshore is the best, for one it doesn’t interfere with NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) because they’re far out sea and hard to be noticed. Additionally, offshore wind is more economically viable. Ocean winds tend to be more reliable and powerful in comparison to inland winds.
