California Awards Money for Coho Salmon Recovery

CDFW News: CDFW awards $13 million for Coho Recovery Projects on the North Coast. CDFW. (2022, February 22). Retrieved August 28, 2022, from https://wildlife.ca.gov/News/cdfw-awards-13-million-for-coho-recovery-projects-on-the-north-coast

On February 22nd, 2022, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) awarded an additional $13 million dollars of funding for coho salmon restoration in the North Coast. This award was made possible by the CDFW’s Proposition 1 Watershed Grant Program. The organization aims to increase the speed and size of restoration by making the granting process more efficient through its Cutting the Green Tape initiative. Other projects funded by the Prop. 1 grants include water conservation and habitat restoration.

This article relates to environmental science because it deals with an endangered species, the coho salmon. This situation is likely due to environmental factors. That is why there are efforts to restore the environment and the animals that live in it. My reaction to this article is positive. It is good to hear about all the progress my state is making to protect natural habitats and species. Grants help environmental efforts and show government support for these efforts.

  1. By now you know I’m a fan of salmon, so I like the sound of this article. Did the article say specifically what “restoration” is going to look like? I imagine they are facing issues of shallow warm water and dams. How could those problems be addressed do you think?

    Nice post, Sheryl.

    • Thanks for this comment! The article itself did not list any examples of restoration, but after some further research, I found that the project indeed surrounded water. Specifically, water transfers and leases were proposed. I also read something about diverting water supply to raise the Coho population. I think these are good solutions. Furthermore, I think it would be necessary to fight any invasive species that are threatening Coho, if there are any.

  2. I did not know that the CDFW was a thing and it is good that they are donating 13 million to help the salmon. With the money donated what are they going to do to help the salmon?

  3. Im always glad to hear that there are efforts being put towards endangered species! What does the CDFW’s Proposition 1 Watershed Grant Program typically entail?

    • Awesome question, thanks! The grant basically funds all things watershed. So, enhancing streamflow, removing invasive species, and more.

  4. Super happy to hear that there are funds going to help salmon. Can you go more in depth about the environmental factors that are causing this situation?

    • For sure! I think recent droughts caused by climate change are particularly threatening because they dry up the habitat salmon live in.
