Poor Salmon Stock Outlook

The salmon populations in California are at an all time low, due to the drought the drier months produce much less salmon then the wetter months. The salmon population follows a  three year cycle so 2023 might have a slight uptick due to the moisture in 2019 and 2020.  The salmon population in California rivers are at an all time low so, there are efforts to reduce the salmon fishing that will take place this year but scientists are still very concerned about the state of salmon.

This article is environmental science because it deals with the populations of salmon and the current suistanability of salmon in our environment. It also deals wit the impacts of our lack of environmental consideration and its effects for our future. Since salmon is such a big part of our ecosystem and the economic life for fishers and port-cities it’s very important to make sure that that is a resource that can remain sustainable and usable, which humans are not doing at good job at right now.

  1. I love salmon so much, I’d hate to see them go toward extinction. I believe that salmon is a keystone species to the environment, without salmon many other organisms will go extinct. Do you think there are any other solutions to solving this issue besides the ones discussed in class?

    • Hi and thank you for taking the time to comment, I’m really not sure about any direct solutions we could have to help the salmon but I do think something that is often overlooked is educating people about these topics and making sure people have a deep understanding of our affected wildlife.

  2. Fisheries and many people hunt salmon as they yield the most meat. This has made them overfished and greatly lower in population. Salmon are vital to the ecosystem and because of human activity they may no longer last for much longer.

  3. I agree, not only does salmon heavily contribute to the environment and the economy, it has a large amount of cultural representation. Unfortunately these fish are constantly over exploited and the species has taken a significant hit. How do we save the salmon?

    • Hi and thank you for your comment, I think saving the salmon will really come down to direct laws and regulations placed on their fishing while we wait for the salmon population to bounce back.
