The Supreme court’s recent ruling of Proposition 12 regarding the humane treatment of pigs may trigger a wave of new animal welfare laws. The ruling was caused by a case involving a meat processing company who was using inhumane practices on pigs. The Court emphasizes that the law protects the animal’s treatment not only prior to slaughtering, but the act of slaughtering as well. The article suggests that this new law could push lawmakers to enforce stricter animal welfare laws, that not only protect livestock but also pets, lab animals, and animals used for entertainment.

I feel that while Proposition 12’s victory is a win for animal welfare, it highlights a broader realization about our societal behavior. This decision could lead to tighter regulations across the meat supply chain, encouraging a shift towards improved conditions for farm animals. However, the path forward is uncertain, as industry stakeholders may resist altering traditional meat production methods. Despite challenges, this choice appears as a positive way to transform animal treatment in the meat industry, fostering a more compassionate and eco-conscious approach to meat production.

  1. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments on this, Arianna. It is horrendous how hogs/pigs are treated. Not to say they shouldn’t be raised for meat, but where’s the humanity? Of course, that will affect the bottom line and likely make it more expensive. Do you think people in general would pay more for bacon if they knew it was humanely raised? Chicken? It is interesting that it went all the way to the supreme court… and they sided with the pigs. A win for humanity and animal welfare.

  2. Hi Mr. Powell, thanks for the reply. In response to your question, I’m honestly not sure if the majority of people would pay more for meat if they knew it was humanely raised. On one hand, it may not be affordable for some people. And in my experience with discussing meat consumption, I find that most people either don’t care about the animal cruelty, or are ignorant about it. On the other hand, there are of course a good amount of people that are knowledgeable about this issue, can afford it, and care enough about the animals to pay a little more for humane meat. I think that one way to encourage buying humanely raised meats is to teach about the issue in school, even if it is disturbing. Students should be shown visuals of what is happening behind the closed doors, as I think that may open more people’s eyes to the reality, rather than just descriptions. Every day, people consume meat without realizing the extent of animal cruelty and the numerous health violations associated with the production processes.
