Incurable Plastic Pollution

From six different countries, a team of researchers calculated that over 5 trillion pieces of plastic waste can be found in the ocean across the globe.  This debris poses the opportunity for significant consequences that jeopardize marine and ocean health.  This immense pollution can be seen as a ‘disease’, the cure is to rid all plastic debris from the ocean.  Since worldwide extinction of plastic would be virtually impossible,  treatments such as waste management, waste prevention and ocean clean ups can be somewhat helpful.  However, many people have denounced ocean cleanup to be radical and rather impractical because they believe it has gone too far to be helped.  Although the amount is intimidating, pollution experts believe with effort put into the correct areas a large amount of improvement can be accomplished.

As plastic pollution increases, it is shocking to see that people believe it is too extreme to be helped and proceed to do nothing.  With an issue this large, an extreme amount of effort is needed to undo the damage that has already been made.  Although there is no “cure” to rid plastic from the environment, advancements towards a cleaner ocean can still be made.

  1. I agree that it is shocking that people believe that there isn’t much that we can do to decrease plastic pollution. I think that if enough people care, a big difference can be made in reducing the use of plastic.
