Soil Erosion in California Article 5

The lack of potable water in California will continue because of soil erosion; the runoff water and soil contaminates water sources, and makes it unusable for drinking. This runoff will have serious effects on the supply of potable water in California. Walls must be put around reservoirs and bodies of water that are susceptible to being polluted by runoff water otherwise it could be very dangerous.

There are serious consequences that may arise from erosion of soil, which will be amplified by El Niño. There are lot of things to watch out for in California this year; there needs to be storm damage prevention measures taken to protect land from soil erosion, bridges, roads, and even reservoirs/water sources. If nothing is done to prevent the destruction of our resources because of soil erosion, then the effects will be felt for thousands of years, and could significantly affect California and its inhabitants.

  1. Because of the dire situation caused by the drought, it is valuable that we find means to preserve the integrity of the remaining sources of fresh water we have.

  2. I like how you tied El Niño and its possible effects into the issue of soil erosion! What is the source of the runoff that is causing this soil erosion? Farms and factories or as a result of rains?

  3. Using walls to block off the soil run off is a possible solution. However, they are forgetting about the several species of animals that use that water to survive, what will they do when the wall prevents animals from their drinking water? Is that really the best solution?

  4. Thank you for all of your comments! This is a really difficult situation indeed; there is no easy solution that solves all of the problems. These rains that are causing the runoff pollution could certainly be stopped with a wall, but a wall may harm the environment of the organisms that live there. Im not sure what else they have come up with in terms of solutions, it is very tough to combat this situation and satisfy all sides.

  5. it is definitely a sector of our states health that we need to be aware of, and future measures for mass run off contamination needs to be found. Most likely something of sort that will redirect the flow of flood/rainwater.
