North Carolina Increasing Shrimping Regulations

This article talks about how North Carolina fishing regulators are limiting shrimping in their state. Their plan calls for limiting shrimping to three days on the Intercoastal Waterway and four days on the Ocean within three miles of shore. This would improve the number and quality of shrimp and other commercial fish. This will mean that North Carolina fisherman, will take a step back in terms of profit from Shrimp farming. This will mean that in the short term North Carolina Fisherman will make less money.

This relates to the environment in that, North Carolina is establishing these restrictions in order to revive the shrimp population on the coast of North Carolina. This will have positive environmental consequences, such as balancing the food pyramid. A species that could only be eaten by shrimp could grow way too big, and disrupt the entire food chain. Re-balancing the shrimp populations would make sure that would not happen.

  1. It is good that these people are actually putting in work to stop the harm to ecosystems. While it may hurt the fishing industry, it is better than over fishing/taking out a whole population and causing permanent damage

  2. This is certainly good to see that more and more fishermen are becoming more environmentally aware of the effects of the fishing industry. It will certainly be important to maintain a balance of feeding a population and not wiping out entire fish species.

  3. I think that, while this regulation hurts fisherman, that it is a step in the right direction to limit the amount of shrimp that can be caught in order for the populations to be able to revive themselves in a way. It is good that people are recognizing overfishing and actively preventing it.
