California recently announced that it will build up to eight new coal powered plants. The funding will come from the Federal Energy department. The sudden change from California’s previous goals comes from the new president, Donald Trump, who is encouraging the usage of coal for energy around the country.

California’s change is very surprising because they had vowed to use 100% renewable energy by 2045 months before. Overall, this is negative because coal is not clean for our air and can cause serious environmental concerns. One of those concerns being that 96 percent of the wind from these plants will end up in states such as Nevada, Colorado, and Utah.

  1. this is sad to see, California is usually a leader in sustainable technology. this new Trump administration is erasing the little progress made in the direction of sustainable energy.

  2. I agree with what Danny said. Instead of making progress, it seems as if California is taking a step back instead of a step forward in terms of progress of sustainable energy.

  3. I agree with you, coal is bad for our air! If we want to heal our environment the only way is to stop doing what we are doing like extracting coal, when we know its causing damage to our environment.

  4. I do agree with some of viewpoints on the ideas of coal being bad for our air, which is true it can be very harmful to our surroundings. But compared to our alternatives (Fossil fuels and other fuels) is coal worse or better than those?

  5. Since California pledged to be 100% renewable by 2045, has the state released any dates on when they expect to close the plants or will they close in 2045?
