Beginning today, you won’t be able to buy plastic bottles of water at San Francisco International Airport

Scutti, S. (2019, August 20). Beginning today, you won’t be able to buy plastic bottles of water at San Francisco International Airport. Retrieved March 8, 2020, from https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/sf-airport-water-bottle-ban-trnd/index.html

In an effort to decrease the amount of waste generated, San Francisco airport has banned single use water bottles.  This is part of their initiative to reduce the amount of trash they produce. According to CNN, SFO annually generates about “28 million pounds of waste, including about 10,000 water bottles sold daily”.  By removing single use water bottles, SFO is making a big dent in their waste generation. This ban is indicative of the eco friendly initiatives being taken around the state of California.

After having read this article I was very impressed by SFO’s new policy.  San Francisco is a large city and has international influence. This recent development will likely ripple around the globe and inspire other countries to decrease their waste amounts.  Although the ban itself isn’t an example of a specific eco-friendly technology it is an example of the prioritization of technology that’s environmentally friendly and further boosts reusability.  If we look at the definition of technology, it says something that humans create to make their lives easier. If we use this definition, then something like a screwdriver or a water bottle is considered technology.  Therefore, a reusable water bottle is technology and is being promoted through SFO’s new regulations.

  1. I think this policy is very innovative and will definetly help us. The fact that 10,000 water bottles are sold daily is insane and making sure that those water bottles are getting used more than once is super important. Have any other airports or large places (stadiums, movie theaters, etc) made commitments like this?
