Letter: Pay Farmers to Rescue Civilization

This article mainly talks about how what we do to our land can ultimately affect the outcome of our climate. Mainly what we do to our soils can drastically change everything about the environment. At the moment, it is mentioned how ¾ of soil organic matter is gone. The impacts of this will only worsen and our food chains will become unstable if we do nothing to help. Within farming we make the soil less fertile which brings up problems to our environment. Using the environment and labor to maintain soils can be important for survival.

This is related to environmental science because it teaches us what really matters for us and our environment. Although many people don’t believe in the soils impacting our climate and ourselves, it needs to be portrayed that it is true. Due to farming it can degrade the lands that we need in order to survive. I believe that this article is important because it tends to go over people’s heads when farming is talked about. They believe that our nutrients are the only important factor although how we get our nutrients play a role as well. I believe that losing soil will ultimately lead to more problems in the near future when it comes to public land use.

  1. I think that there should be further education about not only how soil is important but also how fertilizers become a large problem with our climate because there is an uncontrollable amount of runoff going into bodies of water. I believe that further regulations should be implemented but I’m not sure how that would be done because many farmers are unable to change what they are doing without hurting their income. Are there any regulations on soil use or are there any solutions being made to prevent soil from losing its organic matter?
