As of August 21st 2023, more than 150,000 people are calling upon the Biden Administration to restore the endangered species act. We are amidst the sixth major extinction phase, as being able to restore the endangered species is not a matter of a choice or even an option, rather it is a necessity. In order for our future generations to thrive in a healthy world, we must realize the truths and urgency of preventing extinction of certain animals within a biodiverse ecosystem as we are reminded that extinction is permanent.

This ties to environmental science as the ecosystems affected by the mass extinction can be regarded as the science between the animals’ environments and the level of action we are taking in order to save them. Depending on the amount of effort that is given to help a specific ecosystem, we may either face extinction of some of the most well known species or we could learn to adapt and help build on restoring them. My reaction to this was that we need to take every precaution possible in order to help the ecosystems. I was also not aware of the severity of the instance we are facing as we are now in the 6th mass extinction.

  1. I agree with you that the severity that we are facing is that we are now in 6th mass extinction and with how also our we need to take precautions to make our future generation healthy. If we are in the 6th mass extinction what happens if we keep leaving the species to get extinct? What will happen to our society if we let that happen.

  2. Stopping extinction seems like it would be a rather bipartisan issue, so it is surprising that it was stopped. What are the downsides to the act that are preventing it from being instated? Are there any particular changes that people want made before they pass it?

    • Thank you for the response. There are no real downsides, rather they believe that it is a bit of a lost cause and brining it back would not help as intended. I believe that the people may believe in an idea of a greater sense of urgency.

  3. I think that the solving mass extinction problems is very important. Is there an area specifically that needs extra protection? Have extinctions up to this point affected the future yet, or is it something that will happen if we don’t fix it now?

    • Thank you for your response. All extinctions have affected the future as in there is little to no chance of reviving certain key species.

  4. I think that solving mass extinction would be great but also challenging. Mass extinctions affect the history of life by decimating existing diversity and ecological structure and creating new evolutionary and ecological pathways. This could be difficult to solve because it happens in many different ways such as climate change, widespread volcanism, ocean currents, and many more. We would need to focus on fixing all of those and many more things in order for it to go away completely. Do you think we can make mass extinction disappear for good?
